PREFACE
COMPILED for the interested observer of locomotives and their performance rather than for the technical expert, the purpose in presenting this collection of drawings of specially selected examples is to assist him to identify any particular class or type that he may wish to identify and, having done so, to acquaint himself with some of the principal features relating to its history, use and constructional details.
Examination of the drawings will in most cases reveal some particular difference that will enable the unit to be recognised even when observed whilst running at speed.
The external steam pipes for instance of the G.W. express passenger types is a class guide as is the taper boiler of the later group of claunsell engines on the Southern.
On the L.N.E.R. the bunching of the coupled wheels and forward pitched bogie of the Pacifics is conspicuous; the former a feature also of the C.I. class, the old Great Northern Doncaster built Atlantics in which it is so pronounced that when fresh from Plant a worn penny can only just be made to pass between the two tyres.
Similarly in respect of other class features.
As most readers will be aware, the numbering and lettering of locomotives together with their livery and, in some cases even, classification are matters which at the time of going to press are still not permanently settled on all the Main Line railways and some differences under these heads must therefore be anticipated. So far as numbering is concerned, full lists covering every class are available very cheaply in specially prepared booklets.
Acknowledgements and thanks are conveyed to the Public Relations Officers of the railways for their kindness in supplying much of the material without which the book could not have been put together.
