Westinghouse Electric Railway Transportation is a collection of selected articles which review in detail the application of electric propulsion systems to rail transportation.

Westinghouse Electric has been a major supplier of equipment to all aspects of the industry, ranging from urban street railways and country trolley lines to high speed interurbans and heavy mainline electrifications, and Westinghouse engineers have traditionally been in the forefront of advancing technology in this field.

Periodically, Westinghouse has published elaborate documents which describe advances in the state of the art, and as the years pass, these documents have served to preserve the history of technical development in railway electrification. From these publications we have selected some of the more interesting projects in which Westinghouse was involved.

The articles reproduced in this volume were originally published between 1915 and 1935, a period of considerable activity and interest to historians in the field. These articles had very limited printings and have not been generally available for many years. Westinghouse Electric Railway Transportation once again makes available this historic material.
