A Brief History of the Central Railroad Co. of N.J.
Its predecessor companies go back some 143 years to the Elizabethtown & Somerville Railway Co., incorporated in 1831. It is one of the oldest railroads in the U.S. Was the first railroad to furnish regulation uniforms to passenger conductors in 1872. First to operate fully automatic semaphore signals in U.S. in 1893. First Railroad to operate a diesel-electric locomotive in 1925. First to use T.V. as an Industrial Application. Its Newark Bay Draw Bridge is one & two fifths miles long. Believed to be the longest of its type in the world. Has the largest Piggyback Terminal in the Port Newark Complex.
