One of New Hampshire's smeller city and suburban street railway systems, the Portsmouth Electric Railway was built between 1898 and 1901 as en extension of the Portsmouth and Dover Branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad. In addition to providing local service in Portsmouth, it extended to Rye Village, Rye Beach end North Hampton and was an important link in the chain of electric railways extending from New York City to Shawmut, Maine. Not a separate corporate entity, the Portsmouth Electric wan merely the title given to that particular operation of the Boston and Maine, and the greeter part of the costs of construction wen paid by the proceeds from the sale of 1E common stock held in the treasury of the railroad.
Much of the information for this history wee taken from the annual reports of the New Hampshire Railroad Commissioners end the Public Service Commission for the years 1898 through 1926 while additional information came from various standard reference manuals and the "Electric Railway Journal". Other important date was suppled by Ralph E. Ramsdell, former dispatcher for the Portsmouth Electric and now superintendent of the Portsmouth Division of the Boston and Maine Transportation Company; Charles E. Woodsum, a former Portsmouth Electric motorman; William H. Brooke, Jr., a Portsmouth "fen" and Donald E. Shaw, Springfield, Mass. Mr. Ramadan spent considerable time and effort in looking up various facts end without his valuable
