Almost from the dawn of the railway age, artists have been inspired by the railways. From Turner onwards, the combination of steam, power and landscape has provided a lure for painters and photographers. Whilst many have endeavoured to record the railway age, relatively few can be regarded as having successfully translated the raw power of the steam engine from reality to canvas. One of this handful is George Heiron, who has been recording the railways of Britain - both in photographs and through art - for half a century. It was in 1951 that he submitted his first photograph to Ian Allan, to be followed a few years later by his first painting - Britannia at speed - and, from that date, the company has commissioned him to produce numerous works, many of which have graced the covers of the company's railway books or been featured in magazines.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the company's association with George Heiron, the company has commissioned Portraits of Steam. The book draws together many of the greatest of Heiron's railway paintings from the past 50 years, as well as a small number of those covering other subjects - maritime and aviation - which he has portrayed. Linking these paintings are Michael Harris's narrative, which records how Heiron became interested in railways and the development of his art, and a selection of Heiron's classic railway photography from the 1950s, when he was at the forefront of the art.
Superbly illustrated throughout, Portraits of Steam is a fitting tribute to the work of one of Britain's foremost living railway artists. It will appeal to all railway enthusiasts and all those interested in the recording of Britain's railways.
