ON THE BACK COVER
Kenneth Leech's footplate experiences extend over nearly seventy years and a wide variety of steam locomotives, including American, Australian and. Continental. Since 1950 he has travelled, mostly unofficially, some 45,000 miles on the footplate, usually as fireman or driver.
This achievement evolved during Kenneth's retirement hobby of photographing steam locomotives, during which he became friendly with enginemen, locomotive inspectors and others, who practically bestowed ron him the freedom of the track, particularly in the West Country. As a result, he rode on all the thirty engines of the "King" class, driving and/or firing on twenty-eight of them.
The photographs in this volume are chosen out of about 20,000 negatives taken in the post-Nationalisation era of steam locomotion. They show each King Class engine with single chimney as built, and with double chimney as later modified. Each photograph is accompanied by text with a personal footplate commentary by Kenneth Leech.
Co-author Bryan Holden is an established writer and broadcaster on steam locomotion, being presenter of BBC Radio Birmingham's long-running Steam Scene programme.
Searching out material takes him all over the country to railway stations, signal boxes, loco sheds, colliery lines and preservation societies.
