Fascinating history of the Piedmont & Northern Railway, the most successful of all intercity railroads. Developed between 1910 and 1916 under the leaderships of James Buchanan "Buck" Duke, the two stretches of railroad were built to mainline steam railroad standards and were the first Direct Current systems. The book details the original plans for the lines, construction and operation, maintenance, the Spartansburg-Gastonia extension battle, how it survived the Depression and World War II, and its eventual absorption into Seaboard Lines. Illustrated throughout with more than 225 black and white photos. With rosters, maps, timetables, and schematic diagrams.
