Picture History of US Transportation, A On Rails Roads and Rivers Craib HC 1958
A Picture History of U S Transportation On Rails Roads and Rivers By Roderick Craib Hard Cover 124 Pages 1958
Here is a fascinating pictorial history of American transportation. Taking as its starting point the more-or-less simultaneous development of the steam locomotive and the camera, the book is a photographic record of the transportation that made our national growth possible. The major emphasis is on the 19th century, although concluding chapters bring the history up to date with action photographs of today's trains, trucks and planes.
Most of the pictures in the volume show railroads and railroading because the story of transportation in the 19th century is largely the story of railroading. Other forms have not been overlooked. The development of rivers and canals is traced, and there are interesting and unusual scenes of progress made on the highways.
This book unfolds the great pageant of the railroad locomotive, from the "Best Friend of Charleston" in the 1830's (first locomotive to pull an American train) to the steam goliaths of the 20th century. In addition, there are rare and exciting photos of other transport forms ... a 1905 Pope Toledo ... a stage coach of the '70's . . . barges . .. river boats .. . inclined planes . .. all the wonderful early models of vehicles that helped Americans shrink a continent.
