Pictorial Survey of Bus Building From the Twenties to the Forties Park Royal
A Pictorial Survey of Bus Building From the Twenties to the Forties With a Brief History By Alan Townsin Volume 1 1979 Hard Cover Park Royal Coachworks 1924-1944
When the Transport Publishing Company's series of albums on bus and coach bodybuilding concerns first began, it was based on collections of photographs, often fortuitous in their content and hence random in their coverage of the variety of vehicles produced over the years.
I have been particularly fortunate in being able to respond to the interest generated by the pioneer volumes by covering the subject in much greater depth in this book on Park Royal and its predecessor-Hall, Lewis-dealing with the period 1924-1944. This is thanks very largely to painstakingly maintained records that have been kept by Park Royal Vehicles Ltd. It has been a particularly rewarding book to put together because of the wide variety of body styles encompassed.
It has been possible to illustrate and describe virtually every major design produced during twenty years in which new ideas were developed and adopted remarkably quickly. The customers who patronised the Park Royal coachworks were so varied that this pictorial revue can almost be considered as a potted history of the development of buses in general during that period. Indeed the variety of products extended even wider, and readers interested in vintage cars and the development of the diesel railcar will find some material which has rarely, if ever, been seen in print until now.
Volume II will continue the story of Park Royal to the present day and, together with this book, will link the work of the early designers and craftsmen of over half a century ago with those of today. Indeed, the first examples of the original Leyland Titan to be bodied by Park Royal were built in 1929 and can be regarded as the predecessors of the integral double-decker of advanced design with the same name that forms Park Royal's present output.
