INDEX 411
By the year 1890, the western half of Colorado, a land of rugged cannons, lofty passes and great sweeping parks, had been covered by a network of narrow gauge railroads, and of all these lines, one stands out above the rest-the Denver South Park & Pacific. Exactly why this railroad should carry such prestige is not known, but as the years pass, the South Park line is loved and honored more and more by railroad historians the length and breadth of the land. Its history has been carefully chronicled by M. C. Poor, in the book which bears the railroad's name as its title -Denver South Park. e..1 Pacific - a volume much sought after by book collectors as well as those interested in railroad history.
In the ten years since the publication of this book, a large number of fine photographs relating to the South Park line and its affiliated railroads have turned up in collections all over the country. The best of these pictures were borrowed from their owners, and are reproduced in this new book, each photograph with an explanatory caption which was carefully prepared by the authors. A brief history of the railroad is included, together with some text in subsequent chapters covering items on which additional information has been discovered, such as the Ohio Creek extension of the South Park line, the railroad's troubles with snow in the unusually severe winter of 1899, and the great staged collision between two former Colorado Central locomotives.
This book was written and published for those interested,in the Denver South Park & Pacific and in the Colorado Central narrow gauge lines, and also the railroads which succeeded them-the Denver Leadville & Gunnison, the Union Pacific Denver & Gulf, .and finally, the narrow gauge portion of the Colorado & Southern Railway.
If one railroad were to be chosen as a single outstanding representative of Colorado's narrow gauge mountain railroads, no other choice than the old Denver South Park & Pacific would be possible. Within the 468 pages of this book, the reader will find scenes from construction days; early passenger and freight trains, along with some of the towns they served; fine examples of motive power from many of the early locomotive builders, such as Mason, Dawson & Bailey, Baldwin, Cooke, Brooks, Rhode Island, and Porter-Bell; pictures taken by early-day photographers, showing some of Colorado's most spectacular scenery; and selected photographs of trains in action. Views along the line from Denver to Silver Plume are presented, including that wonderful engineering masterpiece, the Georgetown Loop; while another section shows the scenery encountered in the railroad's heyday between Denver and Leadville, and on the line from Como to Gunnison.
Distributed throughout the book are maps, timetables and full-color paintings, which help round out the story of this fascinating railroad and its affiliated lines. The 680 pictures in this volume also include views of train operations throughout the railroads' history, their last runs, and a few views of dismantling operations. A section is devoted to representative passes issued by the railroads, while an entire chapter presents detailed information concerning the engines and equipment of the various lines, including rosters of locomotives and cars.
This Pictorial Supplement was compiled for those who thrill to the thought of a jaunty Mason bogie stepping smartly through South Park; who can imagine a multi-engine freight blasting up a grade; or who have trudged along sections of the abandoned grade to view scenes enjoyed by the railroad's passengers in the dimly remembered past.
