British Columbia and railways are inseparable. It was the Ottawa government's promise of a railway which brought British Columbia into Confederation in 1871, thereby transforming the huddle of eastern colonies into the "Dominion from Sea to Sea". Constructing the promised railway across the mountains of British Columbia nearly bankrupted the fledgling corporation sponsoring it, and almost tore apart the infant nation which the pledge of a railway had created. But the railway was the making of both the province and the nation.
Since completion of the transcontinental railway a century ago the railways of British Columbia have continued to play an important role in the history and development of the province. And the story of that role is a fascinating one. Particularly fascinating is the photographic legacy left behind by a handful of professional and amateur photographers whose work in recording on film the scenes and events of their day, often little appreciated at the time, now represents a priceless heritage. The Pictorial History of Railroading in British Columbia is a selected sampling of these photographs, blended with a background text, to bring to the general reader an appreciation of the role which the railways of British Columbia have played in the province's development. Also included are timetable samples, and other memorabilia of the railway age.
From the first crude tramways to modern unit trains powered by remote-controlled "slave" locomotives, more than a hundred and twenty years of evolution have taken place in British Columbia's railway system. This book - in words and pictures - tells that story.
