Pennsylvania Transportation History a Supplement By William Shank Soft Cover
Pennsylvania Transportation History a Supplement By William Shank Soft Cover 1990 72 pages
Those of you who have read any of my other books are probably aware that I have covered the development of Pennsylvania's highway system in my INDIAN TRAILS TO SUPERHIGHWAYS, now in its Third Edition, Fifth Printing.
Also the 19th-Century Canal Building Era is comprehensively described in my AMAZING PENNSYLVANIA CANALS, which has come to be considered the definitive work on this subject. This book is now in its Fourth Edition, Seventh Printing.
Innovations in the building of long-span bridges in the Keystone State are documented in HISTORIC BRIDGES OF PENNSYLVANIA, now in its Third Edition, Fifth Printing.
VANDERBILTS' FOLLY contains much of the early history of the Pennsylvania Railroad, as well as its contemporary-the New York Central. The book is basically a history of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Second Edition, Ninth Printing.
The purpose of this book, which I am intentionally calling "A Supplement," is to provide you with some of the other chapters in the on-going history of the development of Pennsylvania's transportation system.
All of the material which follows was published originally in my book THREE HUNDRED YEARS WITH THE PENNSYLVANIA TRAVELER (1976)-now out of print.
Shank has covered many phases of Pennsylvania's transportation history in his books on canals, aqueducts, highways, bridges and early automobiles. This book, entitled a supplement, adds media and devices not covered in his other publications on these individual topics. Included are such inventions as the 1804 Orukter Amphibolus, early river craft, rope ferries, early steam boats, inclined planes, gravity railroads, steam locomotives, horse cars, cable and trolley cars, elevated rail and subway systems and air-travel devices. Approximately 100 old photos, drawings and tables.
