This book is a compilation of the motive power and trains of the Pennsy, taken from my collection of railroad photographs, which I took between 1931 and 1938, at Jersey City and Newark, N. J. They were originally 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 and 2 1/4 x 4 1/2 inch negatives, and have been enlarged in my photo lab to the 8 x 10 inch format.
This group of photos is a cross section of the different types that the Pennsy used; although it is not a complete roster in any respect. It merely shows the particular types that were most prevalent during the years specified. At a later time, at the war's end, the Pennsy built much larger and more streamlined engines, which unfortunately, were short lived due to the advent of the diesel engine. These magnificent steam giants were displaced in just a few more years, and all of the coal and steam technology that was acquired, went with them.
