ENDNOTES156
Pennsylvania Railroad Gondola Cars in Revenue and Work Service, 1869 to 1968, is a continuing work in the PRRT&HS's series of books on PRR equipment, which began in 2007 with Pennsylvania Railroad Business & Special Cars - A Century of Tuscan Red Deluxe; it was followed in 2008 with Pennsylvania Railroad Flat Cars in Revenue and Work Service, 1881-1968, and in 2010 with Locomotives of The Pennsylvania Railroad Volume I, The Early Years 1848 - 1874. The intent is to provide comprehensive sets of information, photographs and diagrams. Where photos of some of the early equipment were not available, standard PRR equipment diagrams have been substituted.
This book follows the progression of the PRR's revenue service gondolas from the early wooden class GA through the transition to steel under-framed, then steel cars, ending with class G44, acquired in August 1966, the last of the gondolas to come out of the shop in the PRR era. Included are classes with drop bottom doors and flat (level) floor cars with hopper pockets. These early bottom discharge cars were not self-clearing, as they needed to be shoveled out, and this met the functional classification as gondolas. The first gondola considered a true self-clearing car was the Lines West wood GG adopted in I895, which placed it in what was later to become the hopper car class H. Of all the gondolas, GA to G44, only the GG and GL were of the self-clearing, hopper type. They are listed here to show continuity, but are not covered in detail. Although the GT/GP and GPA classes were also self-clearing, they used the side dumping methodology, not hopper pocket, so are included here in some detail. Revenue gondolas converted to and used as work equipment are included in Chapter III.
