PREFACE
This book contains two parts. The first is a reprint of a rare and valuable book describing original Penn Station's architectural and engineering details including the river tunnels. These tubes were an integral and vitally essential part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's, direct rail entrance into New York City's Manhattan Island. Its descriptive material was authoritatively written by men who worked on the complexities associated with such a gigantic task.
Penn Station, appropriately called "A Temple of Transportation," and "an architectural gem," combined in the highest degree the primary function of such an edifice, capable of meeting the exacting demands of railroad transportation, with a building of monumental dignity. Unlike some contemporary railroad stations, there was to be no compromise by using "air rights" for non-railroad office space, and to this the Company adhered. Only in the splendid and impressive arcade were located some few floor-level shops representing a small concession to commercialism.
The second part of the book represents my contribution. In it are described and illustrated through text and captions, types and classes of jack-shaft, side-rod drive electric locomotives. These "motors" initially, and later, contributed immeasurably to the project's success, without which, it may well at that time have foundered.
In bringing Pennsylvania Railroad passengers into New York City, and that classic station by direct rail connection, a lasting tribute to the memory of its great President, Alexander Johnston Cassatt, should ever belong. His sudden, and unexpected death on December 28, 1906, tragically prevented him from seeing the culmination of this vast enterprise which he had so resolutely advanced.
