INTRODUCTION
While my longstanding fondness for New England and its railroads could-at some level, I suppose-be traced to having
entered the world just a few miles from the Rutland Railroad's Ogdensburg, N.Y., terminus, it was a family trip through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in the summer of 1966 that left me with my earliest first-hand memories of northern New England and planted the seed for return visits that would become an annual respite.
By way of definition, "Northern New England," as portrayed in the chapters that follow, comprises Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and the upper half of Massachusetts. In a railroad context, consider it everything east of the Hudson River and Lake Champlain (with a nod to the New York State toeholds of the Boston & Maine and Rutland) and north of (but excluding) the Boston & Albany Railroad, all the way up to the Canadian border. In Boston, think North Station, but not South Station.
