FORWARD
The study of railroading in such a limited geographical area as West Kentucky and touching on several railroads must, of necessity, be a bit jumbled. One has the choice of chronological or topical presentation. I chose the chronological.
No writer ever put words to paper without a reason. Many of the facts I have recorded have appeared in other publications. Mine is the only effort to bring all that hodge-podge of scattered data together in a localized forum. All the anecdotes and personal accounts, I am proud to say, are original as far as publication is concerned.
Thus, my reason is very personal. I have read most of the published material on all the local railroads particularly the two authorized histories of the Illinois Central. In the main, the accounts simply gloss over the Paducah Operation. The record in West Kentucky must be preserved.
I wanted to do the work. Others had intended to prepare a similar work, notably Mr. Frank Burnham, who was L & N agent in Paducah for many years. That which comes to us all claimed him. The others simply put off doing it.
It is virtually impossible for one person to glean all the interesting material which could be included in such a study. I do not presume to have everything. If anyone wishes to add to this report, please do so. But do so before you can only wish that yours had been included. My only real regret is that I know I do not have all of the story.
If this report appears to admire the Gulf, Mobile and Northern, you are very perceptive. That little company was blessed with genius leadership. If it appears heavy on IC, the only comment I can make to justify the emphasis is that I am an unabashed IC railfan.
