Introduction
'THERE ARE STORY BOOKS and there are picture books. I There are encyclopedias and there are poems. Is the last word on a subject ever really written? Probably not.
The book in your hands is a fond look at the 4-6-2 type locomotives of the Southern Pacific as seen through the eyes and lenses of those who worked on them and admired them. Visual appreciation of the esthetic evolution of this locomotive type as well as a pictorial look at its operational history remains the theme of this volume. The roster and appendix provide certain mechanical information, but I will leave it to the Churches and the Kratvilles to record the nuts and bolts details.
A number of knowledgeable steam veterans have given unselfishly of their remembrances and their photograph collections to this effort and I would like to thank two in particular, my friends Jim Boynton and Bob McNeel, for adding real flavor to this book.
Every book on steam locomotives really should take a good look at their tenders too. Extra special thanks go to Arnold S. Menke, the undisputed authority on S.P tenders, for providing photos and the material for Chapter Three.
Harre Demoro shares my unabashed love for the Pacifics, and his enthusiasm and magnificent photo collection helped keep the fires going on this project from beginning to end.
Others who were only too happy to help included Robert A. Campbell, Sr., Mac Gaddis, Walt Grande, Tom Gray, James H. Harrison, Nils Huxtable, Bob Kern, Stan Kistler, Peter Kunedt, Arthur L. Lloyd, A.D. McLennan, Mike Mangini, Alan Miller, Iris Myers, A.M. Paine, Kenneth Roeh, Joe Strapac, Joe R. Thompson, Harold K. Vollrath, Wilbur C. Whittaker, and Ted Wurm.
Thanks are also due Mac Sebree and Paul Hammond of Interurban Press for bringing this project to its final fruition.
The next chapter in the Pacifics' story is being written today in the efforts of Bay Area volunteers to bring one or more of these handsome machines back to life. May 2472's Family Album provide inspiration and historic perspective to the generations who will fall in love with the Pacifics because of what these volunteers are doing today.
