ON THE BACK COVER:
OPERATION TORBAY : The fourteen-mile Torbay branch from Newton Abbot to Paignton and Kingswear served one of the most popular tourist areas in the Country and at times carried a volume of passenger traffic that defied belief. The operational logistics were both complex and fascinating and although much of a general nature has been written in the past about the activities of the line during the 1950's, OPERATION TORBAY is the first time that the minutiae of passenger operations has been dealt with in depth with each coach of each train of the Summer 1957 working timetable - Weekdays and Saturdays - being described with details of previous and subsequent workings.
In 1957 the holiday traffic reached its peak and this book shows how the railway pulled together its passenger resources in order to allow holiday-makers from most parts of Wales and England to reach Torbay with the minimum of inconvenience. The result was a cascade of through trains which clashed with the heavy service from London at Taunton and had to queue - sometimes for hours - on a two-line section of track through Somerset and Devon before reaching Torbay, often well behind time.
The story of the Newton Abbot - Kingswear line is the contrast between the enormous flow of holiday traffic and the ridiculously inadequate facilities of the line where no station had more than two platforms whilst a significant length of main line was operated with single track. The staff of the line fought a heroic weekly battle in an attempt to force a quart into a pint pot and it would be an affront to railway history if their struggles were to be lost to posterity. The role of OPERATION TORBAY is to keep the memories of Summer Saturdays in the Torbay area alive.
