FOREWORD
As the first railroad to enter Texas from the North, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Company has been an influential factor in the development of the Great Southwest. One hundred years ago, in 1870, the story of the Katy's building began, and in the intervening years it has grown to be of greater and greater importance as a Southwestern rail transportation agency.
The acquisition of new cars and locomotives, the improvement and rebuilding of track, roadway and other physical property, and the building up of morale among employes, shippers and the public, all now in progress, enable Katy to efficiently, safely, promptly and satisfactorily handle all traffic entrusted to it.
The Katy owns the proud heritage of a romantic past. There was romance in the daring conception of a railroad that would traverse the hills and valleys of Missouri and Kansas, penetrate the wilderness of Indian Territory, now the great state of Oklahoma, span the plains of Texas and finally reach the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. That the dreams and hardships of its founders were worthwhile is evident in the present great railroad, dedicated to the furtherance of growth and development in the area it serves.
There is outlined in the pages of this booklet a brief historical sketch of the Katy Railroad, presented on the occasion of the railroad's Centennial Anniversary.
