This book traces Palmer's unique railroad history beginning in 1839 through the present, showing how the railroads changed Palmer from a farming community into an industrial and commercial center. Many rare previously unpublished photographs of familiar Palmer locations are included. Comprehensive maps guide the reader through Palmer's villages and portray every railroad route. But this book is not just about trains. It tells how railroads affected everyday life, from the wealthy men who controlled the lines to the personal stories of past generations. Here are the stories of corporate swindles, ghost railroads, and the town's lively trolley system.
When the Railroad Advisory Board first began talking about compiling our collections, railroad experiences . research to create a book about Palmer's railroads, we found ourselves faced with an exciting opportunity that was driven and defined by the enthusiasm of our peers and the entire community. We quickly understood the gravity of our task to produce what would become the first extensive and significant town history published in over a century. Several people rallied and cheered us on, and many came forward offering assistance plus valuable gems of Palmers rail road history, probably because this is the first book of its kind about the "Town of Seven Railroads." These people completed a circle of confidence and added to the enthusiasm we felt as writers about such an intricate and broad Palmer-based subject.
