About the Book
Although the age of steam has passed, the subject holds a fascination for many, and there are numerous enthusiasts to whom this book will appeal. It gives a condensed outline of the steam locomotive in the British Isles from its beginning early in the nineteenth century until the cessation of steam traction in the nationalized British Railways system in 1968. As far as possible the principal landmarks in progressive development of designs are given due attention.
Special emphasis has been given to the many examples of locomotives which have survived for preservation. They are either static exhibits at museums, or at various centres run by private organizations throughout the country.
