For Baby Boomers, model railroading and Lionel are synonymous with Christmas and family. It conjures up memories of times gone by. Time spent with dad, putting up the trains around the Christmas tree. ...Oh, those happy holiday times.
Since then, the trains were put away and most of us went through school, cars, girls, military, marriage and raising our own family. We had gotten away from our trains, forgotten about those times until mom (or grandma) brought them out of the attic. Then it started all over again. Except now, we have more money, a wider variety of products and the time to make our great train empire.
The changes that have occurred in the hobby while your trains were sleeping in that attic are enormous! We have engines and rolling stock that look and sound like the real thing. There is Command Control, ProtoSounds, Station Chatter, Yard Chatter and LocoSounds. We have a variety of power sources. Even an engine with a TV camera in the nose so you can view your layout from the engineer's perspective. And who knows what will be next!
Some of these innovations, on the surface, can appear confusing. Even as this book is being written, a great many things are happening that will change our future and could add enjoyment to our hobby.
But don't forget why you returned to this hobby: Someone took the time to share it with you when you were a child. If you are now a dad or grandfather, let the kids help you with your layout design and construction, no matter what their age. Allow them to accompany you to the hobby store and have a say in the purchase of a train or accessory.
Too many times when I meet new friends at shows, I hear the excuse, "I'll let them play with my trains when they're old enough to appreciate their value." Is that what your parents told you when you were a kid?
Youngsters of 4 or 5 will never learn the value of anything unless you teach them.
Model railroading is a great tool to learn basic math, physics, electricity, proper use of tools, geometry, history, geography and family values.
I have fond memories of my son, Scott, helping me build several layouts. When the size of the pike increased, he was small enough to climb on top of the layout while I worked underneath, poking wires, mounting switch machines and more. My wife, Nancy, and daughter, Barbara, helped with scenery and more.
Now Scott is a computer database administrator and Barbara is the chief operating officer of our company and heavily involved in the model railroading industry.
You never know where this hobby will lead you and your family. Share your enjoyment and the rewards may be beyond your wildest dreams. Enjoy this book and enjoy your hobby.
