DUST JACKET INTRODUCION Volume Two by Fred A. Stindt
344 Illustrations 5 Maps History - Statistics
Coming into being in 1907 as the ultimate consolidation of some forty railroad companies, the Northwestern Pacific was the creation of two of the giants of western railroading: Southern Pacific and Santa Fe. The railroad rose as a prominent carrier of passengers and freight in the Redwood Empire. However, by the mid-1930's the passenger train all but ended leaving only the Eureka trains. Freight loads continued to increase. After World War II, the steam engine disappeared and in its place came the diesel locomotive. Volume Two portrays the last days of NWP steam, the Southern Pacific steam locomotive that took its place, then its demise and transition to the diesel era with its many varied types. With a number of disasters (tunnel fires and floods closing the railroad for months at a time) trucks began taking over the extensive lumber haul. When the 1980's rolled around it left the Northwestern Pacific Railroad on the brink of total abandonment. This book details the events as they happened, and with the many photographs, it is a veritable feast of railroading nostalgia as the pages unfold. Besides maps and locomotive leasing statistics (both steam and diesel), there is a chapter on the now abandoned Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad and the newly formed Eureka Southern Railroad. Also an appendix which includes a series of rare photographs of freight and maintenance-of-way cars (MW) of the early years.
