Volume Two of The Northwest's Own Railway tells the story of the many interesting SP&S subsidiaries, including the Gales Creek & Wilson River Railroad, Great Northern Pacific Steamship Company, Oregon Electric Railway, Oregon Trunk Railway, Pacific & Eastern Railway, Spokane & Inland Empire Railway, Spokane, Portland & Seattle Transportation Company and United Railways Company as well as the Astoria Line and the Goldendale branch.
Included in Volume Two is one of the most interesting episodes of western railway history: the story of the "Canyon War" during which James J. Hill's Oregon Trunk Railway battled E.H. Harriman's Des Chutes Railroad (Union Pacific) to build up the Deschutes River canyon into Central Oregon.
The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway included more diversified modes of transportation than any railroad of similar size rail, steamboat, steamship, buses, logging lines and electric interurban service.
Volume Two completes our history of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway, and tells the story of its influence on the development of the Pacific Northwest.
