The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway, together with its many predecessor companies and subsidiaries, provides one of the most interesting and varied stories of railroading in the western United States. Volume One of THE NORTHWEST'S OWN RAILWAY tells the story of the main line from Portland to Spokane, with a separate chapter for each segment. In addition there are chapters on corporate history, finance, traffic patterns, operations and equipment. It also includes a roster of SP&S motive power and a photo of every class of locomotive owned by the line. An added attraction is the large number of early historical photos included in this volume, as well as 16 pages of color including three Howard Fogg paintings.
The SP&S was a well-built railroad which closely followed the Columbia River between Vancouver and Pasco, with minimum grades and curves. The line followed the Snake River and then turned north through the "Channeled Scablands" of eastern Washington toward Spokane.
This railroad was jointly owned by the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway, and its history is entwined with the story of the parent lines. It later became part of Burlington Northern, Inc.
