DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
A Northwest Rail Pictorial Volume III is Warren Wing's fifth book and his third pictorial based on his vast collection of photographs covering railroads in the Pacific Northwest. If you've been fortunate enough to meet Warren or attend one of his presentations, you'll know why many consider him to be one of the Pacific Northwest's treasures. With his stunning accumulation of photographs and near-encyclopedic knowledge of most lines, Warren has the rare and unique talent of taking "a bunch of old train pictures" and transforming them into an interesting and engaging look at bygone days. In fact, historian Paul Dorpat often looks to Warren to provide early photographs for his popular Now e?' Then series in the Pacific Northwest magazine section of the Sunday Seattle Times.
Volume III of the pictorial series takes us in a different direction than the earlier volumes. Volume /was devoted primarily to the photographic work of James Turner, a pioneer railroad photographer who gave us a wonderful glimpse into railroading from the 1920s through the 1950s. In Volume II, Warren shows us one of the great turning points in railroad history, when the new, powerful diesel-electric locomotives replaced the venerable steam locomotive.
In Volume III, we're taken to different locations in the Pacific Northwest and given a glimpse of the earlier days of railroading in a way that only Warren can do. In this book, you'll find hundreds of photographs carefully selected by Warren as those best depicting settings and places that are in fascinating contrast to what you'd find today. Warren takes us to Oregon, Canada, Montana, and of course all throughout the Puget Sound area. He also takes us to the formidable Cascade Mountains, showing through his photographs the struggles encountered by the railroads as they fought "'- their way over the treacherous passes. You'll also see an entire chapter devoted to railroad logging, a fascinating era before the arrival of the diesel truck, when a special breed of logger used a rugged kind of railroad to pull the "big sticks" out of the woods. There's also a chapter on the "juice" lines, the electric-powered trolley cars that served as the transpiration arteries before the area was crisscrossed with highways.
Another great feature of Volume III is that it showcases the work of some of the area's best-known photographers. You'll see images from Harold Hill, James Turner, James Fredrickson, Will Whittaker, Robert Johnston, Al Farrow, Fred Jukes and others-a veritable who's who of Northwest railroad photographers. In addition, Warren does a great job of showcasing all the area's mainline operators, including the Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Great Northern, Milwaukee Road, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle. Warren also shares some great shots of lesser-known bygone lines such as the Hartford & Eastern, Seattle Lakeshore & Eastern, Bellingham Bay & British Columbia, Pacific Great Eastern, Spokane International, and Butte Anaconda & Pacific. And of course, Warren shows us a wide variety of motive power, a real hallmark of his ability to round out a collection of photographs such as this.
Whether you're a railroad enthusiast or a history buff, or you simply enjoy looking at photographs from bygone days, you're going to love what Warren has assembled for this book!
