Here is an all-color pictorial of the Burlington Northern Railroad in the Pacific Northwest. Created by the merger of predecessor railroads in 1970, and expiring as a corporate entity upon merger with the Santa Fe Railway in 1995, the Burlington Northern offered a distinctive corporate image inspired by the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. For twenty-five years, trains powered by BN's Cascade Green diesel locomotives were a familiar icon of the region, complementing its physical beauty.
With 186 magnificent photographs taken by some of the country's finest railroad photographers, Northwest Passage highlights the spectacular scenery of Washington, Oregon and Idaho through which Burlington Northern's trains passed. Deep blue waters of Lake Pend Oreille and Puget Sound, rugged cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge and the Deschutes River Canyon, amber wheat fields blanketing the rolling Palouse hills, lush fir-clad slopes of Stevens and Stampede Passes, snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range, arid canyons and coulees of Eastern Washington ... all are portrayed here.
The photographs in this book span the entire quarter century of Burlington Northern's existence in the Pacific Northwest, including pictures of diesels painted in the color schemes of BN's predecessor roads as well as BN's own color schemes. The fascinating variety and evolution of BN's motive power and operations are captured here, too: from Alcos and Covered Wagons to six-axle cowl diesels and ubiquitous Geeps: and from boxcar manifests, branch line locals and yard switchers to intermodal hotshots and unit trains.
