America's great transcontinental railway, the Northern Pacific, during the post-World War II years, is a fascinating story. It was a period of dramatic change for the nation's railroads, including transition from steam power to the diesel-electric locomotive.
The Northern Pacific - designated by Trains magazine as the "All-American Railroad" - entered the diesel era with a large fleet of modern, well-maintained steam locomotives. Furthermore, the railroad had large reserves of low-cost coal. Although the diesel-electric locomotive offered many advantages, such as reduction in shop forces, dismantling of costly coaling facilities, elimination of many water stations, and the ability to run around-the-clock, conversion to diesel power entailed many risks. The technology was new, maintenance personnel required higher-level skills, fuel supplies were uncertain and subject to price fluctuations, and each locomotive was more costly than comparable steam power.
As a sequel to the highly regarded Northern Pacific Supersteam Era: 1925-1945 by the same authors, this volume tells how the NP gradually and then more rapidly, made the transition to diesel-electric motive power. Covering in detail, all of the road's diesel locomotives - the first-generation switchers, the early road units, and the postwar road-switchers. The more powerful and technologically advanced second-generation units, such as the U25C, the U28C, the SD-45, and the U33C, are also presented.
This book is based on years of careful research in corporate records, interviews with former Mechanical Department employees and operating personnel, and railroad photographers.
Northern Pacific Diesel Era: 1945-1970 is a meticulously researched and well-written book that will appeal to rail historians, railroad enthusiasts, students of locomotive technology, and those who have an interest in diesel locomotives and their railroad history.
