COVER: On a July 1947 afternoon, westbound 13. the Columbine, takes water, sand and Bunker "C" at the Beverly facilities. The fireman is on the tender deck topping out the oil and water while the hostler fills the sand dome. Even before the tank lid slams shut, the engineer will pull five long whistle blasts to call in the conductor. In minutes. 13 will be serviced and ready to continue its westbound run to Omaha. The little M-2 switcher behind the waycar has delivered the afternoon transfer and is ready to depart for Cedar Rapids after taking its own coal and water. Lloyd Keyser photograph.
