North American Steam Locomotives The Mountains by Jack Farrell & Mike Pearsall  Copyright 1977.  380 pages.     Hard cover with dust jacket and cardboard sleeve.
The Mountain Type Locomotive, more than any other, fostered modern steam railroading in North America. Here was an engine that pulled heavier freight tonnage, yet supplied speed for long-haul passenger runs. Its size strained hand-firing's limits, but it arrived along with the first practical mechanical stokers, a happy marriage which changed railroading's pace between two World Wars.
Built in greater numbers-2,201 engines-over a greater time span-1912-1948-than most modern power, their variety was immense, their owners legion. From Alaska to Mexico, California to Nova Scotia, they served lines large and small. The New York Central's vast fleet-more than 600 Mountains built over a 27-year span-even displaced the vaunted Hudsons on the world-famed Twentieth Century Limited. The New Orleans-Great Northern's light trio improved tonnage ratings across Louisiana's marshes. Illinois Central Mountains mocked speed limits on coal drags and The Panama Limited alike.
This book, like its predecessor, The Northerns, offers a detailed roster of all its namesake engines. Each class' history appears in single road chapters, charting such achievements as these:
Mountains brought longer passenger runs without changes to the Great Northern, Frisco and others.
Cast engine beds and disc drivers turned 20-year old Missouri Pacific Mountains into speed demons.
Passenger Mountains proved fine fast freighters on the once anthracite-oriented Ontario & Western.
Profuse illustrations-large size, high quality-capture every class in portrait and action, black-andwhite and color. The Mountains captures railroading's essence at its high water mark-when steam sought its ultimate level of excellence.
