Norfolk and Western Magazine 1974 February 15 Work with the Soil
N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1974 February 15 Work with the Soil
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly at Roanoke Va. About the cover, The special-effect picture on this month's cover represents the talents of Norfolk and Western Railway Photographers Aubrey Overstreet and Jim Sutliff. They used their imagination to provide an unusual way to advertise the Norfolk and Western Art Exhibit, which is slated for February 20-27 at the Hotel Roanoke.
The cover is an example of posterization -a technique which lies on the fringe of photography and graphic arts but is a purely photographic medium.
Photographer Jim Sutliff took the original picture in black and white of a cobweb covered with early morning dew. Mr. Overstreet. who is assistant manager of the NW's Photographic Services. decided to turn the high-contrast picture into a posterized cover.
The result - the imaginative cover advertisement for the Art Show. NW designer Mary Abbott worked closely with Mr. Overstreet in determining the placement of lettering on the cover.
She also selected and sized the print and converted it to a cover.
