Norfolk and Western Magazine 1973 April 15 AC&Y Railroad
N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1973 April 15 AC&Y Railroad
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every six weeks at Roanoke Va. About the cover, The cover photograph this month shows the "prototype" box car built recently in the Norfolk and Western's Freight Car Shop in Roanoke. The car, built for Ford Motor Company, is being used for the movement of miscellaneous automobile parts that are loaded at consolidation facilities in Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland.
Already the prototype car has proved advantageous to Ford in loading greater volume in less cars which has increased Ford's capacity without expenditures for plant expansions. Heavier unit carloadings that have resulted since the prototype car was put into service have also been advantageous for the NW.
A five-man crew constructed the prototype car in about three months by raising the height of a 60-foot, 100-ton box car from 15 feet, two inches to 17 feet. This extra height gives 1,108 additional cubic feet for loads. Increasing the box car's cubic capacity enables the automaker to increase its rail loads from 55,000 pounds to about 75,000 pounds per car. This greatly lowers Ford's unit costs for the transportation of component parts.
When representatives of the Ford Co. recently came to Roanoke to view the prototype car before putting it into service, they had much praise for the work of the NW crew and added that the car "is exactly what we had in mind, only better."
The cover photograph, taken by NW Photographer Jim W. Sutliff, shows welding work being done on the prototype car before it was completed for Ford service. The success of the car has initiated interest among other automakers for such cars and the NW expects to be making more in the near future.
