Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly at Roanoke VA. Vol37 #10
THE PICTURE on the front cove: of this issue shows Train No. 86, one of the Norfolk and Western's well-known time freight trains, entering the west portal of our Elkhorn Tunnel, about 14 miles west of Bluefield. This train provides fast service for the movement of freight from the Midwest via Cincinnati and Columbus to many points on the N. & W. and connecting lines to the Northeast and to the South. The
train's final destination is Norfolk where some of its freight is exported to foreign countries.
Elkhorn Tunnel, one of the largest double-tracked tunnels in the world, was opened for traffic on June 26, 1950. Through its construction the N. & W.'s grade against eastbound traffic was reduced to a maximum of 1.4%, making possible the efficient operation of heavy tonnage trains on this district of our railroad.
