Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly at Roanoke VA. Vol37 #12. About the cover, THE PICTURES on the front cover of this issue record two important events in the merger of the Norfolk and Western and Virginian Railwaysthe movement of the first train from the Virginian to the Norfolk and Western (top picture) and from the Norfolk and Western to the Virginian (bottom picture). Both movements took place on December 1, the effective date of the merger, the operation in the top pictureat Abilene just an hour and ten minutes after midnight. In this picture, Norfolk Division Superintendent H. E. Caner is waving the train ahead, and in the lower picture Radford Division Superintendent C. H. Hale is giving a highball to the engineer of an N. & W. coal train moving across the new connection east of Glen-var. Others pictured with Mr. Hale arc Assistant Superintendent C. G. Hammond, Jr., and Trainmaster A. F. Wilson. With Mr. Carter at Abilene (but not pictured) were: B. II. Lester, assistant superintendent; J. C. Irvin, trainmaster; R. E. Cabiness, road foreman of engines; and E. S. Hughes. roadmaster.
