Norfolk and Western Magazine is published monthly at Roanoke VA. Vol37 #8. THE FRONT COVER of this issue is illustrated with a picture of N. & W. time freight train No. 84 just west of Thaxton, Va. As most railroaders know, No. 84 is one of our principal through freight trains handling miscellaneous merchandise traffic from the Midwest via Cincinnati and Columbus to many points on the N. & W. and to numerous destinations or railroads via the Bluefield. Roanoke, Lynchburg and Petersburg gateways. Through Petersburg, by the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line railroads, No. 84's freight rolls as far south as Florida. The train's final destination is Norfolk where some of its tonnage is exported to foreign countries.
The crew of No. 84 on the day the picture was made was composed of Conductor M. P. Dodson, Engineer II. J. Walrond, Fireman C. J. O'Brien, and Brakemen J. A. Williamson and R. B. Stump.
