N&W Norfolk and Western Employee Magazine 1957 July Roanokes Diamond Jubilee Issue
Norfolk and Western Magazine is published every month in Roanoke, Va. THE FRONT COVER of this issue portrays one of the highlights of Roa-noke's Diamond Jubilee-re-enactment of the arrival in Roanoke of the first train over the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, June 18, 1882. The costumed crowd on the station platform, representing Roanoke citizens of '82, was composed of members of the cast of the Jubilee pageant, "The Rising Star", under the direction of Loyd Spangler of the John B. Rogers Production Company. The old locomotive-a Class M built in 1906-and the two old cars (built in 1916.17) it pulled, symbolized the Shenandoah Valley train. For further details about the re-enactment see page 44 of this issue.
