No other industry can command anything like it. You don't see historical societies for steel or glass or electrical equipment manufacturers. Other forms of transportation have a minimal following -- your editor has known but two unabashed bus fans. No one models the Ohio Turnpike in his basement, populating it with operating model Fords, Chevys, Toyotas and Freightliners, and researching pavement and bridge colors.
Only the rail industry has such a following, and the interest of its enthusiasts evidences itself in a variety of ways. Photographing the prototype, modelling its equipment and operations of past and present, conducting historical research, writing, restoring equipment and structures -- all these activities help preserve the history of this remarkable industry which has such a hold on the American imagination.
The rise of railroad historical societies (again, a phenomenon unique to the railroad industry) provides another preservation resource. Many years ago, we of the NKPHTS voted to make donations to worthy projects as Society finances allowed. As National Director Bill Quick explains in this issue, this effort evolved into a more formal mechanism, the McCaleb-Rehor Memorial Fund. It provides a method for the Society to assist other organizations in preserving Nickel Plate artifacts -- and for members to become part of this effort, even if they cannot physically assist due to distance or other reasons.
"Historical" is part of our name for a very good reason, and preserving the physical Nickel Plate is a truly worthy effort. The McCaleb-Rehor Memorial Fund, named for two men who did so much to chronicle our favorite railroad in word and image, makes our society an active partner with other dedicated organizations in preserving for future generations those items that were part of the Nickel Plate -- and it deserves your support.
