The seventeen year battle between the valiant steam machine and the ever intruding diesel is detailed in this writing by Eric. The first part covers the period from 1941 through 1958 and the end of steam. Part II will be presented in the Winter 1975 issue and will cover the period from 1958 to merger day in 1964. Also, an all-time diesel roster with an up-to-date disposition table will be featured.

A pictorial Zook at the finest of steam power on the Nickel Plate and its main adversaries; a host of switchers, the PA's, and the Geep. The steamers could handle all comers until the Geep came, from then on even the PA's were in trouble.
