Climb aboard and see something unique in railway travel. Ride the mixed train to Bonavista and on the way go around the Trinity Loop. A section of track of about one and a quarter miles circles a pond and crosses under itself, dropping just over 34 feet in making this loop. Built in 1910, this section of track was used for 72 years.
This series of books tells the story of the Newfoundland Railway, from the start of construction in 1881 until its closure in 1988. All private railways are covered as well. NEXT STOP: GAFF TOPSAIL (in its fourth printing) and NEXT STOP: WRECKHOUSE (in its second) are still available. NEXT STOP: ST. JOHN'S (the fourth and last in the series) is underway and will be published in 1999. The series includes in-depth taped interviews with more than 50 retired railroaders as well as over 600 photographs. To "ride" on all our 1000 miles of track, get the complete set.
