Construction of the Newfoundland Railway began in St. John's on 16 August 1881. Forty years later, 1000 miles of track was under operation. The history of railroading in Newfoundland is a fascinating story of workers' determination to keep trains running under very adverse conditions. Learn about the total transportation and communications system spanning 107 years. Meet the workers who devoted their lives to providing an essential service in the days when the only way to travel was by train. Ride the train over the toughest subdivision into Newfoundland's capital city and the oldest city in North America. Take a voyage back in history. Pleasant journey!
This series of books tells the story of the Newfoundland Railway, from the start of construction in 1881 until its closure in 1988. All private railways are covered as well. NEXT STOP: GAFF TOPSAIL (in its fourth printing) and NEXT STOP: WRECKHOUSE (in its second) are still available. NEXT STOP: ST. JOHN'S (the fourth and last in the series) is underway and will be published in 1999. The series includes in-depth taped interviews with more than 50 retired railroaders as well as over 600 photographs. To "ride" on all our 1000 miles of track, get the complete set.
