The official title of the nation's smallest state is "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." Rhode Island is the present-day Aquidneck Island which consists of the city of Newport and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth. The area was first settled in 1636, one hundred and forty years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A few families arrived that first year to escape religious tyranny; however, it was not long before the island's population materially increased because of a moderate climate, fertile farm and grazing lands and one of the finest natural harbors in the world. Another important factor was the friendly nature of the island's earliest inhabitants, the Indians.
