This book provides an all-colour collection of images from one of the great railway photographers of the 20th century, covering seven years of the 1950s, when colour photos of New Zealand generally were rare, let alone those of its steam trains.
It was a time when the railways, like society, were very different from today. The railways handled virtually every type of freight that was available to carry and steel rails connected not only cities and major ports, but many rural communities. The photos in this book of rakes of carriages forming mainline passenger trains and short goods trains trundling up quiet branch lines evidence a time when life was simpler and less hurried than today.
Sit back, put your feet up, and take a nostalgic journey through the New Zealand that once was, and the last decade when Steam was King.
