Foreword
The inspiration to write an historical sketch of the New York State Railways was provided by Felix Reifschneider in his Trolley Lines of the Empire State where he asked in the foreword if someone couldn't be induced to write the history of a company with which he was familiar. While it is difficult to claim familiarity with the lines of the New York State Railways, except the Rochester subway, inasmuch as all lines, except the subway, were abandoned prior to the birth of this writer, or during his early childhood, nevertheless the company has fascinated him, and this outline is an attempt to record its rise and fall.
Many individuals have aided the writer. Among those are: James I. Barstow, Philip C. Becker, Thomas Chamberlain, A.W. Crittenden, Elmer Dean, J.R. McFarlane, Elmer W. Fry, William R. Gordon, Robert Gurley, S.D. Maguire, Richard F. Pearson, Paul Renault, Felix E. Reifschneider, Melvin Rosenberg, Edward Watson, Art Weinman, John Woodbury and C.W. Yingling. L.R. Brown of the Rochester Transit Corporation; Harold E. Bean, Edw. Oot and Regina M. Hopkins of the Syracuse Transit Corporation; and Thelma Jeffries of the Rochester Public Library were also of valuable assistance. Candid Photo Service of Elmira Heights, N.Y. prepared many of the photographs used herein.
The route maps were prepared by the father of the writer, the late Calvin R. King, Sr. Timetables are from Transportation News, the company magazine, volume 2, number 1, August 1924. The "Incorporation Chart- is also from Transportation News, the July 1925 issue, page 24. A few errors appear in this chart; but, it is used to show the general organization of the company.
Rosters of the passenger cars used by the company at its peak during the 1920s are included. Because of the many changes made to its cars throughout its history, these rosters do not delineate details. It is hoped, however, that these will give the reader an idea of the many cars used by the New York State Railways.
