INTRODUCTION
In August 1977, I made my first trip to southwestern Ontario. The end of a pleasant day of exploring the railways in the Windsor area found me in the hamlet of Comber. To my surprise, the weather-worn station from the 1880s was still standing. While passengers no longer disturbed the peace of this lonely sentinel, Penn Central maintenance men used the structure as their home base. In front of the Victorian relic stretched an arrow-straight, double-tracked line laid with some of the heaviest rails then used in Canada. The battered joints and fouled ballast, however, clearly indicated that the best days of this railway were past.
My reason for seeking out this obscure spot was to observe the passage of the community's daily passenger train. As the heat of the day faded and dusk turned to night, a headlight appeared in the east. As the minutes passed, it seemed to be making little progress. "Probably a reflection of the poor state of the track," I thought. These musing were refuted when the grimy black E-8 sporting the Penn Central logo roared past the station at a good 75 miles per hour. Several battered Amtrak-lettered stainless steel passenger cars rollicked in its wake. I had forgotten how far one could see over the flatlands of the southernmost tip of the province.
Just a couple of years later, Amtrak's Niagara Rainbow was discontinued, ending 125 years of New York-Detroit-Chicago passenger service through southern Ontario. This book will attempt to trace the evolution of rail passenger service in this important international travel corridor while giving extra emphasis to the service provided in this part of Canada.
To place developments of the rail passenger service in context, it has been necessary to touch upon the history of the rail lines. Those seeking more details about the history of the Canada Southern Railway and its relations to the Michigan Central and New York Central are referred to my earlier book The New York Central in Canada: Southern Ontario Lines Volume 1.
