Introduction
The eastern end of the New Haven Railroad was Boston, the capital city of Massachusetts. However, this was not always the case. The New Haven did not actually have direct access to Boston until March 1893, when it absorbed the Old Colony and Boston & Providence railroad companies, thus gaining control over the 44 mile line between Boston and Providence, Rhode Island.
Previously, New Haven cars were carried in and out of Boston on trains operated by the Boston & Albany, Boston & Providence, and New York & New England railroad companies. The acquisition of the Old Colony and Boston & Providence forged the final link in the New Haven Railroad's famous Shore Line Route main line between New York City and Boston.
