New England Rails
1948-1968
by David R. Sweetland
Nineteen hundred and forty-eight to nineteen hundred and sixty-eight were some of the most colorful years for the New England Railroads. From the backwoods branchlines of Maine to the high density electrified territory of the New Haven, trains operated with a large variety of motive power. Alco's strong sales of first generation diesels to this six state area added to the assortment of units operating in the region. During the fifties both the New Haven and the Boston & Maine experimented with several locomotive paint schemes adding to the color of this time frame. The Canadian National and Canadian Pacific operated lines in New England adding to the diversity of motive power. EMD, Alco, GE, FM and Lima were all represented on the old yankee rosters. This photographic journey starts at New Rochelle, New York going north through the Connecticut River Valley to the Canadian border, and then along the New England coastline from Connecticut to northern Maine, all in full color from 1948 to 1968.
