The book is timely in view of recent federal rail reorganization. The history of New England railroads, as a group, has not been published as a book for about thirty years. The text examines the history of principle railroads in New England between 1944 and April 1, 1976 - the beginning of ConRail.
The book discusses what the railroads in New England and the rest of the country must do to survive. Their continued existence will be dependent upon: increased use of technology, coordination with other modes of transport and fair, consistant government legislation.
