National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. ABOUT THE COVERS
On the front cover is the Grand Orrery which won first place in Complicated Clock Movements in the NAWCC Crafts Contest in 1992 for Edward W. Willard (OH). The orrery contains 64 wheels with over 4000 teeth and 18 pinions with counts varying from 8 to 20 leaves. The dials show minutes, hours, days, months, and the lunation cycle. The dial showing the phases of the Moon is located on the bridge. Power for the movement of the clock, calendar, and orrery is supplied by a 60-cycle 1 rpm synchronous motor. By disengaging one wheel, the orrery can be operated manually. One turn of the crank moves the works one day. Power is also fed up to the bridge which rotates once per year and contains the Earth, Moon, Venus, and Mercury, all revolving around the Sun in their proper respective periods. Mr. Willard estimates the time to design and construct an orrery is 1200 hours.
