INTRODUCTION
I remember the first time I visited the Natural Tunnel of Scott County, a neighboring county of my home in Cleveland, Virginia. I was awestruck with this immense exposure of limestone cliffs, caves, and deep gorges, just as most are when they first train their eyes on the gaping chasm, which extends hundreds of feet downward and into the Tunnel. Breathtaking! I had to learn all I could about this natural feature. To understand the Tunnel, I tried to unearth as much information about this geologically haunting structure as I could. That information-gathering episode sought references that could explain the facts and culture surrounding the Tunnel's geologic development and history. My journey revealed many sources, but too few to complete the picture. Some were no longer available, and others fragmentary. I found no individual source containing all the answers to my numerous questions-until now.
The author offers the only comprehensive account of Natural Tunnel's geologic development and cultural history. The reader will find no better compilation of well-documented and meticulously assembled explanations of the Tunnel's development, written for both scientists and nonscientists alike. The history of the tunnel, as offered by the author, is clearly presented and covers a multitude of uses spanning the cultural years of one of Mother Nature's most amazing features. The railroad history of the Tunnel is as fascinating as its geology. Railroad buffs will love the stories, the historical photographs, and the captivating documentation of a past era.
I read few books that leave me so captured that I must continue until I reach the final chapter. The author's writings and collection of historical photographs are unsurpassed. His chronology of the Tunnel's bygone days is as complete as I have encountered. Tony Scales's ability to explain complex geology in an understandable way is equally extraordinary. Anyone with a smattering of interest in local history or geology will benefit from his undertaking. This book is an absolute necessity for scientists, local and regional historians, geographers, educators, environmental scientists, and laypeople from all walks of life, whether they have experienced the Tunnel or not.
In a word: unrivaled!
